Worship in the Lord's Prayer: Part 3

Sunday, 31 July 2011 22:24

The "fear of the Lord" is a theme seldom looked at as a type of worship. It is a topic Jesus introduces in the Lord's prayer with these 4 words: "Hallowed Be Your Name."

In Part 1 and Part 2 of this Bible study we spent time looking at the Fatherhood of God and also the corporate praise we can enthrone the Lord upon in public worship.

"And he said to man, 'The fear of the Lord--that is wisdom, and to shun evil is understanding.'" Job 28:28

Hopefully, this scripture study series on the Lord's prayer has been like mining for silver or gold and not like raking leaves. There will be a lot of scriptures in this study as well. Click here for links, thoughts, and tools for personal Bible study.

In the prayer we have been studying, Jesus continues his words saying we should acknowledge and revere the sanctity God's name. As one reflects on the word "HALLOWED" several synonyms come to mind - Revered, Venerated, Consecrated, Sanctified, Holy, Holy, Holy.

From Greek it is transliterated hagiazō: ἁγιάζω hag-ee-ad'-zo

The idea is to separate something from things profane and highly revere it. When it comes to hallowing God's name, this is a sign that one "fears the Lord." Even the Jews, before Jesus' teaching, feared the Lord's name so much they refrained from even speaking it! This was a clear over reaction since Isaiah 12:4 and other passages using "Yahweh" command us to CALL ON HIS NAME- so it must be OK to do so- with grateful, humble reverence.

God made it clear in Exodus 3 that it would be his name forever! And we should stand in awe of our "GREAT I AM." The thousands of times it used in the Old testament are a fascinating study - many showing wonderful, loving ways God meets our needs as frail humans. (That would be different Bible study - and a great one!)

However, Jesus is Yahweh - "I AM". And in our worship may we hallow his greatness. Look at these verses and journal the praiseworthy qualities of Christ - some of them FEARSOME to those walking in God's presence.

  • Jeremiah 23:5-6 (Yahweh used)
  • John 6:35
  • John 12:38-41 (Isaiah 6)
  • John 14:6
  • John 8:12, 56-58

The Fear of The Lord

This has been a wonderful journey into God's word: One that I have been journaling for over two years as I did Bible study on worship. I pray it helps you grasp the fear of the Lord. It is clearly a type or an act of worship. It puts God in the place he belongs in our hearts and minds. If we grasp his glorious, holy, fearsome beauty - we will worship! For example, "Fear the Lord and shun evil."

From Beginning to End - Fear The Lord

The Fear of the Lord covers our lives from the beginning to the end...

Beginning - "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge..." Proverbs 1:7

Middle - "Do not be wise in your own eyes. Fear the Lord and shun evil" Proverbs 3:7

End - "Now all has been heard, here is the conclusion of the matter. Fear God and keep his commands. For that is the whole [duty] of man." Ecclesiastes 12:13

Even to this day, some Jews wear the traditional yarmulke or kippah which came from two Hebrew words: "Yareh Malka" which means "Fear of the Throne (King)." These caps are a reminder to Fear God.

Worship is our overall purpose in life. We were created for his glory. So, it makes perfect sense that "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom." Proverbs 9:10

Here are several categories on the Fear of the Lord for you to study and journal further in your Bible studies...

STUDY TIP: Any quiet time has to be "YOUR" quiet time. Reflection takes time. Meditating on the word and meditating on your heart and meditating on your actions and praying about each will require quality effort and quantity time. Profound changes rarely happen in the fast lane.

Let me share my favorite verse on fearing God to close. If we can grasp who God is and hallow his greatness and his name it will brings the blessing promised below... This is Isaiah 33:5-6

"The Lord is exalted, for he dwells on high; he will fill Zion with justice and righteousness. He will be the sure foundation for your times, a rich store of salvation and wisdom and knowledge; the fear of the Lord is the key to this treasure."

May we all fall deeper in love with God and his word and show him by our lives, privately and publicly, as a spiritual act of worship, that we truly fear him.
