HOPEww Responds To U.S. Storms

Wednesday, 30 December 2015 09:40

disaster responseSevere storms hit the U.S. South, Southwest and Midwest over the Christmas holiday weekend, unleashing floods and tornadoes that killed at least 43 people, flattened buildings and snarled transportation for millions during a busy travel time.

In Missouri, emergency workers have evacuated residents from their homes and conducted dozens of water rescues on Sunday. At least eight people had been killed and numerous roadways had been closed. Our partner church in St. Louis, the Gateway City Church, advised that all church members have been accounted for and no emergent needs have been reported.

In Texas, at least 11 people were killed in the Dallas area over the weekend by tornadoes, including one packing winds of up to 200 miles per hour. The twister hit the city of Garland, killing eight people and blowing vehicles off highways.

According to Walt Thomas, HOPE worldwide Chapter Director for the Dallas/Fort Worth region said, “All members of our church fellowship are accounted for and their homes intact. We’ve been calling and visiting church members to assess the needs.” He continued, “We are focusing on helping specific families that are related to church members that were hit. Cities are letting people in to clean up. Already, 30 HOPE worldwide volunteers have helped with clean-up in Garland. Volunteers were taken back by all the destruction.”
