Alexandro: The Wild Man of HOPE Youth Corps

Every group needs someone who is the life of the party, the energy giver, the “lift everyone’s spirit” person. Alexandro Holguin, a student at the University of New Mexico, definitely fit that role during the December 2013 HOPE Youth Corps in South India. He was not the only one with boundless energy - but he certainly stood out with his infectious zeal and fun spirit.

HYC Reflections: "Freely You Have Received, Freely Give"

Over Christmas break, I had the amazing opportunity to participate in HOPE Youth Corps in Chennai, India. Our team was about 120 people from all around the world. We taught kids, we interviewed villagers, we painted murals, we learned and performed traditional dances, we talked to lepers and heard their life stories. I could talk for days about all of the adventures we went on. It truly was one of the greatest experiences of my life.

HYC Reflections: Christmas in India

In my 23 years of life, God had blessed me with so many incredible experiences and opportunities. And as I sat on the beach this time, overlooking the Indian Ocean, I thought, “Why me? Why am I here? Why have I been the one allowed to see what I have seen? And what do you want me to do with it?” “To whom much has been given, much will be expected” – I would undoubtedly count myself in the category of someone who has been given much and I want to make sure I do much, with that much.

I had the opportunity to serve in the HOPE school, HOPE orphanage where Blood Brother was filmed, and a leprosy colony. I just wanted to stay in India forever and help people. But like all HYC’s, it was time to go back home…
