They gathered in Guadalajara from the U.K. the U.S., and throughout Mexico—Tijuana, Mexico City, Monterrey, Oaxaca, Puebla, Cuernavaca, Querétaro, Saltillo, Tlaxcala, and Leon. Around 200 worship leaders—instrumentalists, singers, technicians, choir directors and others—gathered in Guadalajara, Mexico for "REVERENT," an international worship conference designed to stimulate more focused, engaged, energetic and thoughtful worship throughout our churches.
A collaborative team from the U.K., U.S., and Mexico, led by Frank Botello (leader of the Guadalajara Church and an outstanding drummer) put together a richly spiritual, inspiring and instructive time. Friday night featured sessions of musical worship from five outstanding teams throughout the host country, intertwined with lessons focusing on the greatness of God seen in creation, the love of God seen in Christ, and the transcendence of God seen in his unparalleled creativity and genius.
On Saturday, eleven separate workshops featured tutorials highlighting high-level musicians and insightful teachers promoted excellence in worship keyboard, percussion, acoustic and electric guitar, bass, vocal techniques, and song leading, along with songwriting, worship team dynamics and in-depth teaching on the theology and impact of intentional worship.
Sunday, we worshipped together with the Guadalajara congregation, with almost 400 gathering together. We were collectively challenged and encouraged to be meditative, energetic, and sacrificial in our worship. Once again, outstanding teams from all over the country led us in powerful praise. And it needs to be said, if you've not had the opportunity to worship with brothers and sisters in Mexico, plan a trip now! They are energetic and passionate, and work diligently to bring their impressive gifts to the throne!
This was not a gathering of people wanting to be better musicians, though that was certainly accomplished. Rather, it was a gathering of committed disciples wanting to be more and more effective in helping to lead their church, in every gathering, to the throne of our incomparable God!
It was a privilege for me to be included with Frank Botello (Guadalajara), Anibal Bayardo (Mexico City), Malcolm Cox (U.K.), Marcus Johnson (Houston), Lourdes Ortega (Mexico City), Diego Munoz (Monterrey) and many others who helped to plan the conference and who brought their knowledge, experience, and personal expertise to share.
