The phrase "living in the present" is a confusing idea for me. I get concerned about what it means. How do I effectively live in the present? With no sufficient answer, I would stop thinking about it only to find myself coming back to the question on another occasion.

sun and treeI read this article about this topic. I realized the way to live in the present starts with prayer. My error was trying to live in the present through my own efforts. Living in the present is connecting to God and placing my needs in his hands. The Lord's Prayer in Matthew 6:9-13 confirms that His will is for us to place our needs in his hands.

The article references Exodus 16:11-21. When I read this, I asked myself, "What things do I grumble to God about?" I realized I needed to repent because my grumbling hindered me from connecting with God and from living in the present.

Remember how the LORD your God led you all the way in the wilderness these forty years, to humble and test you in order to know what was in your heart, whether or not you would keep his commands -- Deuteronomy 8:2 (NIV)

God used the desert to test the Israelites hearts and he tests our hearts as well. The test is obedience. The test is trust. God wants us to trust and obey that the time and place we are at in life is right where he wants us. If you are in the desert, hold firm to your convictions. If you are coming out of the desert encourage others. The present is the testing ground for your faithfulness to God and his plan for your life. Take some time to pray and ask God to give you the strength to pass the test.
