Disaster Response Update from HOPEww Featured

Wednesday, 27 September 2017 00:09

hopewwMany churches in the US stepped forward to rally support and funding for our disaster response efforts. With their help, we have been able to bring hope to many families in Houston and the surrounding communities, including many members of The Greater Houston Church!

These families will need months of additional help from friends and family, HOPE worldwide, and many other assistance agencies.

Please continue to pray for their recovery. In the meantime, we created a video to say "thank you" and share some of our progress. Click here for the video, please share it with your church and pass on our sincere gratitude for their generous kindness! Below are a few updates about our disaster response efforts in recent weeks:

houston disaster volunteers 2Helping Houston recover from Hurricane Harvey

Donations are still coming in designated for Harvey Relief, but we have already raised just shy of $200,000 for Harvey response efforts in and around Houston. To date, we have established a disaster coordinator on the ground, and we have organized five teams of volunteers from Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, Austin, Baton Rouge and other cities across the US. These teams have cleared 35 homes of debris, wet carpet, and dry-wall, preparing them for repairs (17 of the 35 are members of The Greater Houston Church). In just a few short weeks, we have spent roughly $40,000 in supplies and immediate relief aid, including gift cards (local hardware and grocery stores) for affected families to spend at a time when most convenient for them. Much of this sum was spent in coordination with the Greater Houston Church as they identified specific needs within the congregation.

Wade Cook, Vice President of US Operations and Frank Dowd, US Disaster Response Coordinator are developing a long-term plan for volunteer service and recovery in and around Houston, including our next Disaster Corps service team arriving this weekend, September 28th - October 2nd. Bringing hope in Mexico City

In Mexico, we have regular contact with church leaders and HOPE worldwide staff on the ground and have wired initial funds for immediate needs. For many years HOPE worldwide Mexico I.A.P. has operated medical and dental clinics for the poor in and around Mexico City. Since the quake happened early last week, clinic staff have been busy treating the injured and/or sick. Donations received for earthquake response have been sent to help replenish these vital supplies.

Caring for the Caribbean

For Dominica, which was devastated by Hurricane Maria, our HOPE worldwide network member in Trinidad and Tobago has been busy sending relief supplies with local military convoys. We have wired additional funds to HOPE worldwide Trinidad and Tobago to help charter another boat full of supplies and food to families in need in Dominica.

In Puerto Rico, the situation remains dire. We have been in contact with local leadership since before landfall, but vital local infrastructure throughout the country remains largely disrupted. We are continuing to monitor the situation, but in the meantime, we have wired funds to local leaders for immediate needs.

Thank you for your gifts and volunteerism as we band together to meet urgent and ongoing needs. We are so proud of our global network of dedicated donors, volunteers, and staff. Together we are bringing hope to communities in need!
