Enjoying Midweek with the Asuncion, Paraguay disciples"Trust in the Lord with all your heart;
do not depend on your own understanding.
Seek his will in all you do,
and he will show you which path to take."

Proverbs 3:5-6 (NLT)

The 2016 SURGE trip to Asuncion, Paraguay was a testament to this scripture and to the power of God's good and perfect guidance. Originally, my plan was to attend only the conference in Peru, explore the city, and buy the typical "bring home to your family" gifts.

But God had a different plan.

Coincidentally, a close sister-in-Christ happened to read an article from Disciples Today that mentioned SURGE going to South America - and that they were beginning this adventure at the conference in Peru, which I was planning on attending along with two other sisters.  After some prayer and research I learned that the SURGE trip was happening at the same time as our trip to Peru! God continued to make it clear that he wanted me to go on this trip. And after sitting down, running the numbers, and even feeling wary about the expenses, the sisters and I agreed that this was God's plan for us.

The next question was where as Columbia, Bolivia and Paraguay were the countries in which SURGE was going to visit. To be completely honest, there was no definite reason why we picked Asuncion, Paraguay. Someone had mentioned a waterfall, but it just felt right to go there. It was a country that we were unfamiliar with. What an amazing choice it was!

I love how God always confirms his plans for us because right away on our first days in Peru during the conference, we met Sara, a sister visiting from Florida. In getting to know her, she shared that she had spent about three years in Paraguay with the church. She shared how she was impacted by the love that the church showed, as well as the food and the beautiful culture. Our hearts grew in excitement and I could not wait to get to Paraguay!

The first day was really difficult for me because I arrived extremely sick and had to spend the day resting, while our SURGE team explored the city, met several disciples, tasted the amazing food and even participated in a very touching moment by encouraging a brother at the memorial service of his family member who had passed away. By the next day, I was much better and was able to participate in the day’s events. We went sharing our faith and even got to try terere with a group of Argentinian college students. During the evening, we joined the disciples for midweek, which completely left me in tears. They had a sister play several songs on the harp, the national instrument, and dancers displaying some of their famous dances. We were even called up to the front, given "I love Paraguay" head bands and surprise confetti with a “Welcome to Paraguay” sign. I felt extremely loved and could not wait to make an impact the rest of the week.

SURGE Paraguay 1The days following, we continued sharing our faith at a college campus and throughout the city and met up with a sister to participate in a Bible study. We got to volunteer at a children's deaf school.  This moment really touched my heart because the disciples on a monthly basis went to the school to give to the children and I got to see how much the kids loved them and us unconditionally even though we could not communicate with them directly. We ministered to the teens for several hours where we answered questions about the struggles of growing up in the church versus becoming a disciple as an adult. Best of all we got to spend time with their singles ministry.

During this time, we all had the opportunity to share our testimonies and got to realize how even though we all live in different parts of the world, we all go through very similar struggles. We shared many tears but were able to inspire the group by allowing them to see that we all through very difficult pasts were willing to go out and serve others, willing to take the time and funds to give back to God's kingdom.

The last day, I could not stop crying. I did not want to leave. I had thought that I was going to Paraguay to give but in reality I was given to. Sara was right; this small church showed me a deep love that I had not known. I was humbled by how open their hearts were to us, how eager every member was to learn from us, especially how grateful they were to have disciples visit them. They are part of me now forever.

Come enjoy the adventure of a SURGE Euro Mission Trip this summer.
