At 39,000 Feet

pamela mcclintonI still get those jitters. I have had them since taking my first plane ride with my twin sister since when were sixteen years old. There's nothing between the plane's wheels and the ground but thin, invisible, air. Butterflies move around in my stomach. I say a prayer, and then....take off! Flying in an airplane is awe-inspiring. God has actually given us the capability to take a machine and manipulate it to move through the earthly heavens to get from one destination to another.

This day as I take off the weather is cloudy. It rained most of the morning, and I was a little nervous about the turbulence. I always imagine God's colossal hand holding the plane in the air as I ride. It helps. I break through the clouds and climb higher, and higher, and higher. When I get through the last layer of clouds, with the nose of the plane still pointed upward, the gray disappears.

And guess what? The sun is shining. It took me by surprise on this particular plane ride. Yes, there it was beaming beautifully down on the earth. I sat back and closed my eyes for a moment. Then, looking at the massive cloud cover below, I realized:

The sun is always shining.

Of course, I knew this intellectually, but it had never quite awakened me as it did this time.

The sun is always shining.

When it's cloudy, when it rains, when it storms, when it snows, when there's a monsoon, or a hurricane, a tornado, a blizzard, an earthquake, a torrential downpour, or when the winds are so heavy that they move objects – if you climb high enough, if you break through the clouds, the sun is always shining. It was an amazing revelation.

"I the LORD do not change. So you, O descendants of Jacob, are not destroyed." -- Malachi 3:6 (NIV)

"God is not a man, that he should lie, nor a son of man, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?" -- Numbers 23:19 (NIV)

"Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever." -- Hebrews 13:8 (NIV)

In our world, the sun is a perpetual heavenly body. Though the earth turns and spins, the sun remains constant, shining on our earth to give us light. So does our heavenly Father. When the cloud cover is rolled away, and the sun shines brightly into our lives, He is still God. When troubles befall us and storms rumble in our lives, He is still God. He is still here. He is always shining. He remains the same. We just need to break through the clouds, climb higher, higher, and sometimes, even still a little higher. The gray disappears and guess what? There he is. At 39,000 feet.

"As the heavens are higher than the earth,so are my ways higher than your waysand my thoughts than your thoughts." -- Isaiah 55:9 (NIV)

"Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God.Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God." -- Colossians 3:1-3 (NIV)

Whatever your challenges today, dear sister, remember that God is always there with you. Always.
